When a ship is in distress, it can transmit long-distance distress alarms, position reporting, and short message communications to shore-based stations via the BeiDou satellite channel. It also enables voice communication with ships and aircraft within line-of-sight range through VHF and aviation channels, as well as position reporting to ships and aircraft within line-of-sight range via the 9GHz channel.
